  1. How do I register for the International Certificate in Banking Risk and Regulation Examination?

    Candidates register for the International Certificate in Banking Risk and Regulation examination through the GARP website by clicking here.

    Please Note: When filling in the registration form remember to use the name exactly as it appears on your current passport and/or government issued photo ID. You will need to bring your current un-expired passport and/or government issued photo ID for identification purposes to gain entry to the test site. If the name you used to register differs from your formal ID you will NOT be admitted to the test site. If you need to change your name, you may do so by  clicking here.

  1. What are the fees?

    The fees for the International Certificate in Banking Risk and Regulation are discussed here. 

  2. Can I defer my registration fee?

    No, an option to defer your registration to a later date is not provided because, among other things, the material on which the candidate is being tested can become dated in a short period of time. If a candidate does not attempt the exam within six months from their date of registration they must re-register as a new candidate and no credit will be given for fees already paid.

  3. Can I transfer my registration to another candidate?

    No, you can not transfer your registration to another candidate.

  4. Can I withdraw from the International Certificate Examination?

    No, there is no withdrawal option provided. If a candidate does not attempt the exam within the six month registration period, their registration fee is forfeited and they are not entitled to a refund.

  5. Can I pay the fees by check, post, or fax?

    Registration fees are only accepted through GARP's secure payment system or by wire transfer. GARP accepts Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.

  6. Do I have to become a member of GARP to sit for the Certificate exam?

    No, but to keep up to date and derive benefit from GARP's continuing career development program, Certificate holders are advised to keep their GARP membership current. To view the benefits of GARP membership, please click here.

  7. Will I pay the same fee of USD $100 on all my extra attempts even once my registration expires?

    No, once your six month registration has expired you will need to pay the full amount to renew your registration. 

  1. What happens if I fail to pass the examination on my first attempt?

    Candidates who do not pass the exam on their first attempt may re-register to take the examination again after waiting 28 days from the date of the examination. An additional $100 fee will be charged to the candidate to cover the cost of administering the examination a second time. All attempts to pass the examination must be completed within six months of the candidate's initial registration. 

  2. How many times will I be permitted to attempt to pass an examination?

    The number of attempts is limited to two within the six month registration period. Remember, a candidate has a total of six months to take and pass the examination from the date they register. If the candidate fails the exam he/she must wait for a twenty eight day period in order to retake it.

  3. What if I take the examination less than 28 days prior to the expiration of the 6 month registration period and fail the examination, do I have to wait the 28 days to take it again?

    Yes you will still have to wait the 28 days to retake the examination. However you will have to reregister as a new candidate prior to retaking the examination but will not be eligible to take the examination until 29 days have passed from the time you last took the exam.

  4. Can I sit the examination whenever I like?

    The examinations are offered at Pearson VUE examination sites around the world (there are over 5,000 worldwide) upon 48 hours advance notice. Candidates should arrange a time for the examination at their own convenience (subject to availability). Examination times can be reserved by logging on the Pearson VUE website (www.vue.com/garp) and opening a personal examination account once your receive the confirmation notice from GARP and following the registration procedures found there.  The Pearson exam fee are already paid for with your International Certificate registration payment.

  5. What do I need as a score to pass?

    You must answer 80 of the 120 questions correctly in order to pass.

  6. Do I have to re-validate (renew) my Certificate qualification on a regular basis?

    No, you are not required to renew your Certificate through another exam.  However, risk management and financial regulation is constantly evolving, so we recommend that International Certificate candidates keep up to date through readings in the GARP Digital Library and the GARP Risk Review.

  1. Where can I sit for the Examination?

    The International Certificate Examination is offered in over 5,000 test centers around the world. A complete list of the test centers can be found on the Pearson VUE web site www.vue.com/garp.

  1. Are there sample questions for candidates to review?

    Yes, at the end of each chapter in the workbooks and on the e-learning module there are sample examination questions.

  2. Does GARP provide an International Certificate workbook to study from?

    Yes, as an option at the time you register for the exam you can purchase the 2 study guides that includes access to GARP's e-learning module. The guides will be sent to you within a week of registering.

  3. Are there any review courses I can take or study groups I can join?

    As a convenience and service to our International Certificate candidates we will make available a listing of International Certificate course providers who have asked to be listed through our website. You can find the listing by going to the Course Providers link on the GARP website. Please be aware that these Course Providers have independently asked to have their information posted for your review and have not been selected or endorsed either directly or indirectly by the GARP Risk Academy or the Global Association of Risk Professionals.  For study groups, you can go to GARP's Forums to see if there are any study groups in your area.  Go to International Certificate of Banking Risk and Regulation forum.

  4. Does the GARP Risk Academy plan to issue new editions of the International Certificate Handbook?

    Yes, as risk management and regulation evolves the GARP Risk Academy will release new editions of the International Certificate study text.

  5. What happens if the version of the workbook relating to the module I have registered for is updated after I registered?

    If a new version of the workbook is updated during the six months in which a candidate has to take and pass their respective examination, the candidate should continue to use the workbook sent to them when they initially registered. The examination the candidate takes is linked to the version of the workbook sent to them at the time they registered and will remain 'live' until their registration period has expired.

  1. How do I book my test site and examination time?

    Once a candidate has registered they will be sent an Authorization Letter instructing them how to login to the Pearson VUE web site (www.vue.com/garp) to arrange for a test site and time for their examination. You will not be able to reserve a time or seat at a test site until after you have registered and paid for the Certificate program through the GARP website.

  2. How do I obtain my Authorization Letter?

    Upon receiving payment, GARP will issue your Authorization Letter via e-mail. However, you may obtain a copy of your Authorization Letter by clicking here. Please note that you will need your GARP ID, log-in e-mail address and password.

  3. What do I bring with me to my examination?

    You must bring your Authorization Letter, current un-expired passport and/or government issued photo ID to the test site. To gain access to the test site the name on your valid passport and/or government issued photo ID must match the name on the Pearson VUE system.  GARP’s ID Policy will be strictly enforced. You can update your name at any time by going to the Membership section of GARP's website by clicking here.

  4. Is food and drink permitted in the examination room?

    No. All candidates must follow Pearson VUE rules on examination behavior.

  5. May I use a personal calculator or other PDA?

    No, neither will be required.

  6. May I bring scrap paper to work out my answers?

    No. The examination uses electronic systems. Any scrap paper or other materials useful to the candidate’s taking the examination will be provided at the test center.

  7. Should I bring a pencil or pen?

    The examination uses electronic systems – pencils and pens are not required.

  8. May I use a dictionary?

    No. Dictionaries, books or study materials of any kind are not allowed in the room during the examination.

  1. When will I receive my test results?

    Examination results will be provided to candidates immediately upon their completion of the examination. You need only to push the button on the computer touch screen when you are finished and your results will be displayed. An email will be sent to you confirming your test results within 1 week of sitting for the examination.

  2. What should I do if I change my postal or email address?

    You can update your address and contact details at any time by going to the Membership section of GARP's website or by clicking here. If you have misplaced your password, please contact GARP's Membership Services Manager at membership@garp.com.

  3. If I am successful on the exam, when will I receive my certificate?

    Candidates will be sent their certificate within 3 months of successful completion of the International Certificate examination. The Certificate will be sent to the address provided by the candidate when he or she registers. If that address provided is incorrect the candidate will be charged a fee of USD $50 to reissue the certificate.


It is important that all candidates notify GARP of all mailing and emailing address changes. Failure to inform GARP of these changes may result in the candidate not receiving all of the necessary mailings and notifications.
